After the Descartes acquisitions

What the Descartes acquisitions mean for 3PLs and freight brokers

Two deals in eight days: Descartes acquired Tai, a freight broker TMS, for $100M (announced 24 August 2026) and Extensiv, the 3PL WMS leader formerly 3PL Central, for $120M (announced 1 September 2026). If you are a customer of either, the practical question is what the new owner does to pricing, roadmap and support at your next renewal, and the practical move is to get terms in writing now. This page tracks what is confirmed as it happens.

Last checked 30 September 2026. Facts about other products come from their public pages, linked below.

What has been written about it

  • Trade press covered the deal mechanics, including FreightWaves, Transport Topics and Digital Commerce 360 (linked below).
  • ShipHero, a competitor, published a piece telling Extensiv customers to demand written roadmap commitments, ask whether pricing is locked, and ask about support-team consolidation; it also raises whether Extensiv could be combined with Finale, which it describes as an existing Descartes product. It ends by offering ShipHero as the independent alternative. Read it knowing it is a switch-to-us argument. (shiphero.com, 30 September 2026)
  • Rajesh Beri's The Daily Brief argues that a Tai customer's leverage sits in the 60 days before renewal. We quote the argument, not his contract-clause analysis: we have not checked them against the actual contract terms, and we do not repeat unverified contract claims. (beri.net, 30 September 2026)

What has NOT been confirmed

  • As of 30 September 2026, we found no announced pricing change for Extensiv or Tai customers.
  • As of 30 September 2026, Descartes had announced no plan to combine Extensiv with another of its products; that possibility comes from a competitor's piece.
  • We found no public customer discussion of either deal, only the pieces above; our search tools can miss forum threads, so this is what we found, not proof that none exists.

What customers can actually do

  1. Find the renewal date; every question below matters more as it approaches.
  2. Ask for current and post-renewal pricing in writing, plus any escalation clause.
  3. Ask what happens to your data on exit (format, fees) and get the answer in the contract.
  4. Ask which roadmap items are committed in writing for the next 12 months.
  5. If you are evaluating alternatives, run your own workflows in each demo and take a sandbox where you can drive the system yourself.

Thinking of leaving Extensiv or Tai?

We migrate you free with any Cargohold build. Cargohold builds systems that compete with Extensiv and Tai, so read this section as our offer, not as part of the tracker. Free migration: we review your data with you, agree what moves where, and move it into your new system at no cost. Migration time is agreed at onboarding and comes on top of the build. If your current vendor makes exporting hard, we work with their support or build a workaround.

How this page is maintained

It is a tracker: Hermes updates it every Tuesday, and whenever Descartes announces a pricing, product or support change, and every entry keeps its date and source. When nothing new has been announced, this page says so instead of filling space. Check the last-checked date at the top before relying on it.

Where we fit

We build a system you own: the code and the data are yours, on your own server, which we set up for you. The price is the build, quoted by scope, with no per-truck, per-dispatch or per-client fees; most builds are handed over in 14 days; your timeline is confirmed in writing after the onboarding call. After 3 months of free support, your IT team is trained, or you take 24/7 support for a fixed monthly fee, quoted with the build. We migrate you free with any Cargohold build: we review your data with you, agree what moves where, and move it into your new system at no cost. Choose a subscription product instead if you would rather subscribe than own. You can walk our system before deciding either way: request sandbox access to see what is live today.
