Extensiv alternatives
Extensiv alternatives for mid-size 3PLs
Extensiv (formerly 3PL Central) is the incumbent 3PL WMS and remains a reasonable choice for many mid-size operations, especially if you want the market leader and are comfortable with its new owner, Descartes, which announced the acquisition, for about $120M, on 1 September 2026. An alternative makes sense when you want a different ownership or pricing model, when the freight side matters as much as the warehouse side, or when the acquisition makes you want a second look.
What is on the other side of the trade
- ShipHero, an independent WMS that markets itself to 3PLs and is actively courting Extensiv customers after the acquisition.
- Logiwa, strong on fulfillment process content and warehouse operations.
- CartonCloud and other mid-market 3PL WMS vendors that publish direct comparisons.
- Custom-built systems (our lane): the code and the data are yours, on your own server, which we set up for you, and you pay for the build, priced by scope, with no per-truck, per-dispatch or per-client fees.
Choose Extensiv if
- You want the category's established leader and the breadth that comes with its integration and partner ecosystem.
- You are already on it and the switching cost outweighs what you would gain.
- A large, stable owner is a plus for you rather than a question mark.
Look elsewhere if
- The quote for your next growth stage does not work: ask for pricing at double your team, in writing, and compare the model, not the demo.
- You would rather own the system than subscribe to it.
- The Descartes acquisition changed your appetite: ask what happens to pricing, roadmap and support at renewal, in writing, before you decide anything. (Descartes press release, 1 September 2026)
How to compare without the sales filter
- Run the same five workflows in every demo: receive, putaway, pick, invoice, and one exception you actually live with.
- Ask for pricing at your next growth stage (double the team), not today's headcount.
- Ask what leaving looks like: export format, fees, and who owns the data (their contract, in writing).
- If freight matters, watch the handoff from warehouse to truck and count how many times data is typed twice.
- Take the sandbox offer: request sandbox access to see what is live today.
Where we fit
We build a system you own: the code and the data are yours, on your own server, which we set up for you. The price is the build, quoted by scope, with no per-truck, per-dispatch or per-client fees; most builds are handed over in 14 days; your timeline is confirmed in writing after the onboarding call. After 3 months of free support, your IT team is trained, or you take 24/7 support for a fixed monthly fee, quoted with the build. We migrate you free with any Cargohold build: we review your data with you, agree what moves where, and move it into your new system at no cost. Migration time is agreed at onboarding and comes on top of the build. If your current vendor makes exporting hard, we work with their support or build a workaround. Choose a subscription product instead if you would rather subscribe than own. You can walk our system before deciding either way: request sandbox access to see what is live today.
Extensiv, ShipHero, Logiwa, Tai, Turvo and Descartes are trademarks of their owners. Cargohold and Microsive are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any of them; the names are used only to identify their products. Cargohold builds systems that compete with them.
