One data model
WMS, TMS and fleet in one system: what one data model changes
WMS, TMS and fleet in one system means the warehouse, the freight and the trucks are recorded against the same objects: one customer record, one shipment, one event history, instead of three systems holding three versions. What changes is the handoff: nothing has to be typed again when work crosses from receiving to dispatch to billing, statuses update once for everyone, and a question like 'where is this and who has it' has one answer instead of three to reconcile.

What one data model actually means
A data model is the set of records a system is built from and the rules linking them. When warehouse work, freight work and fleet work share one model, a shipment exists as a single object that receives, putaway, pick, load, dispatch, delivery and invoice are all recorded against. When they do not, each area has its own object, and the connections live in exports, re-keyed fields and people's memories.
What changes when it is one system
- The handoff from warehouse to truck carries itself: no order is re-typed to become a load.
- One status trail: receiving, dispatch and customer service read the same state of the same record.
- Billing sees operational events as they happen, because it is reading the same events, not a summary of them.
- One record of the customer: contracts, rates, inventory and shipments sit together instead of behind three logins.
- Changes happen once: a corrected address is corrected everywhere.
How to test whether a system really has one
- Watch a receiving clerk complete a task, then ask where that record now lives and who else can see it without a re-entry step.
- Ask to follow one order from arrival to invoice in a demo, and count the places where data is typed a second time.
- Change a customer's detail in front of the vendor, then ask which screens updated without a sync job.
- Ask what happens to the shipment record when it crosses from the warehouse to a truck: does the identifier change?
What it is worth
The value shows up as time not spent reconciling: fewer calls between the floor and the office, fewer invoices rebuilt from spreadsheets, fewer answers assembled from three screens before a customer can be told anything. It is also the difference between reporting on what happened once, accurately, and negotiating between three reports that disagree.
