YMS
What is a YMS (yard management system)?
A YMS, yard management system, tracks what happens between the gate and the dock: which trailers are on the property, where each one is parked, which door it is assigned to, who moved it and when. It exists because the yard is where a busy site loses time: a trailer that nobody can find is a door that sits empty while another truck waits.
What it records
- Every trailer by identifier, with its status: in the yard, at a door, on the way out, dropped or live.
- Spots and doors: which space is occupied, which door is booked for which appointment.
- Moves: who pulled which trailer where, with the time, so the yard's history can be reconstructed.
- Dwell: how long each unit has been on the property, by customer and by door.
Why the gate is the choke point
Everything a yard knows starts at check-in: a trailer that enters without a record is invisible to the system for as long as it stays. Sites that put the gate record (arrival, identifier, customer, appointment) in the same system as the door assignment find the trailer in one lookup; sites that keep a paper gate log find it by walking.
